How This Calculator Works

The pattern estimate mode uses SWD and strand width to estimate the solid metal percentage, then calculates sheet weight from thickness, material density and sheet size.

  • Use pattern estimate when you know SWD, LWD and strand size.
  • Use known open area when a drawing or stock table already provides open area.
  • Use the result as an RFQ starting point, not as a load-bearing or engineering result.

Formula Notes

Solid fraction: 2 x strand width / SWD.

Open area: (1 - solid fraction) x 100.

Weight per sheet: sheet area x thickness x material density x solid fraction.

Does this calculator give the final expanded metal weight?

No. It gives a sourcing estimate for RFQ preparation. Final weight depends on drawings, material grade, raised or flattened type, tolerances, surface treatment and production method.

What are SWD and LWD in expanded metal?

SWD means short way of diamond, and LWD means long way of diamond. They describe the diamond pattern size and should be confirmed from drawings or supplier specification tables.

Can I use a known open area from a drawing?

Yes. If your drawing or stock table already provides open area, use known open area mode and enter sheet size, thickness, material and quantity.
